DATE: May 25, 1982
• TO: Donald Hickerson, Chief of Police
FROM: Richard Engstrom, Investigator
SUBJECT: Case Status for April, 1982
I screened forty-six (46) new cases for April, 1982 . . Sixteen
(16) cases met the criteria for an active investigation. I
also carried nineteen (19) cases from previous months into
April, due in part to an ongoing investigation by several
police agencies in the metro area including our Department.
Three ( 3) major burglary groups are actively working the metro
area, engaged in residential burglaries. One (1) group of four
(4) active up to March of 1982 , has been broken up through ar-
rests and sentencing to Juvenile Detention Centers and St.
Cloud Reformatory.
Those cases investigated for April, 1982, are as follows :
2 - Residential Burglaries 3 - Suspects Pending
6 - Felony Thefts 3 - Suspects Pending
2 - Theft by Check 1 - Suspect Pending
1 - Child Abuse 1 - Suspect Cleared
• No charge
1 - Aggravated Forgery 1 - Suspect 1 Charged
4 - Gross Misdemeanor D.W.I . 4 - Suspects 2 Charged
Eight ( 8) Search Warrants were drafted and executed in Xpril.
Total loss from thefts and burglaries $ 76 , 569 . 00
Total loss from damage to property (vandalism) 1 , 125 .00
Total stolen property recovered 23, 175 . 00
Most of my investigative efforts were put into long hours of
surveillance and intelligence gathering on burglary suspects
that were. responsible for all but three ( 3) residential burg-
laries since January, 1982. This effort was a combined opera-
tion of Edina, Golden Valley, Crystal, New Hope, Bloomington,
Hennepin County and our Department. . The net result was the
break-up of two (2) large burglary groups and the recovery of
more than $250, 000. 00 in stolen property.
Special recognition should go to some of the officers from our
Department who helped gather intelligence data that was re-
sponsible for pin-pointing criminal targets in our area. Sgt.
Protelsch should be commended for his help in gathering infor-
mation that furthered- and expedited the investigation. Sgt.
• P.rotelsch- donated several hours of his own time after his
shift was concluded.
