Elmwood. Putheran Church
i
a
Vlntwood•
0.
3615 Cheeme6on.d Road, M..nneapo .i,e, MinneAota 55418 189-6201 Pastor Phonel 5771-4682inson Jr.
1
1
'October 25, 1983
j David Childs, City Manager
St: Anthony Village City Offices
J 3100 Silver Lake Road
St. Anthony Village, MN 55418
i
Dear Mr. Childs,
I wish to bring the city up-to-date on our building program that was pro-
f posed back in July of this year. At that time, our architect made preliminary
plans for an addition to our church building by which we could seat an addi-
tional 100 parishoners. The addition would also provide us with 10 new Sunday
school rooms, and enlarged kitchen and a fellowship hall.
During the public hearing on July 19, the neighbors to the south voiced
their objection because the building would be constructed in line with the pre-
sent structure which is only 15' from the shared lot line. Even though this is
within building code, the Planning Commission denied approval and recommended to
the City Council to also deny it.
At the council meeting on July 26, we were again heard without gaining
approval. However, the council suggested to table the issue until we could come
up with an alternate plan to be further away from this lot line. The neighbors
were also asked to make some concession at that meeting. I think everyone
recognizes the needs of the church as it grows.
On September 4th, a new proposal was given to the neighborhood group for
reviewal. This plan was one discussed earlier by both the neighbors and council.
It would locate this new structure parallel and about 30' to the east of the
present classroom wing. The plan also calls for the 15' extension to our pre-
sent sanctuary building for the additional seating. The two nice trees on our
property would be saved. This new structure would now be located 57' from the
shared property line.
On September 12th, I received a letter from the neighborhood group again
stating that this plan was unacceptable. It seems now, that no matter what we
try outside of a northern building, we are denied. As explained in earlier
statements, we wish to reserve any land to the north for a future sanctuary.
What is our next move? Why are we denied to build on our own property, when
we would not violate any city ordinance? We have made concessions in this mat-
ter and now. feel that the neighbors should also.
Sincerely,
Richard A. Jones, Trustee
