Environmental Quality/Recycling Committee •
March 10, 1994 Meeting
Page 2
was suggested that staff send a letter to the haulers to inquire if they are passing
this savings on to residents.
Recycling Center
Chairperson Enrooth indicated that the City Council has requested that the Task Force
investigate whether the City should continue to keep the recycling drop off center open. State
and County grant money has been cut. The grant money supported the drop off center. Costs
to keep the center open could cost the City $10,000 during 1994.
The City can keep the recycling center open until June with grant money. It was suggested
that the residents should be educated about curbside recycling before that time. This can be
done by the newsletter and other news media. The Task Force consensus-was that it is not
necessary for residents pay for curb side pick up and a drop center.
Motion by Bergstrom and seconded by Hall to recommend to that the City Council close the
drop off recycling center as of June 30, 1994. It was also recommended to use the news
media and Newsletter to inform the residents about curbside recycling, and to install signs on O
the site of the drop off center informing the residents of alternative recycling.
Motion carried unanimously.
1994 Goals and Objectives
Task Force members had been given a page listing recycling topics and were requested to rank
them in order of importance. Mr. Hall commented that wood burning fire places could be
added to the list. The rankings will be given to the Chairperson and the Task Force members
will be notified of the results.
Mr. Beneke perceived that there should be only one hauler in the City because the roads are
getting torn up by the trucks and the number of large trucks travelling on City streets.
Mr. Bergstrom suggested that the list needs more discussion.
Elections
Chairperson Enrooth, who is the Council liaison to the Task Force felt that a Chairperson and
Vice Chairperson should be selected and that the Council and staff liaisons would serve in an
advisory capacity in the future. Mr. Enrooth then called for nominations for Chairperson of
the Environmental Quality/Recycling Task Force. •
