December 3, 1996
Mr. Michael Mornson,City Manager
3301 Silver Lake Road
St.Anthony, MN 55418-1699
Dear Mike,
am sorry about not being able to.attend the Wednesday meeting to discuss the council table design but I
will be at meetings in Washington until Sunday.
To begin, there is a $5,000 allowance in the contractors bid to be applied to a council table. When we
established that allowance the table was designed as two straight sections in a V shape, was somewhat
smaller, was two feet deep in lieu of the current 2'6", and did not accommodate the television
monitors.
The current design of the council table is an arc shape which responds to earlier council discussions
about sight lines. The ability to see one another is enhanced if the sides are curved rather than straight
as with the V shape.
The design I would prefer for the council table would have a front of burnished concrete, masonry like
the lower part of the walls in the room and have a charcoal gray/black color plastic laminate
countertop. I think it would look like it is a part of the room and not merely furniture. The combination
of the colors would be both subtle and elegant. The cost with the table supports notched to receive the
TV monitors will be from $8,000 to $10,000. That range of cost is from Graus and is being refined to a
firm number at this time and assumes that.the TV installation will be by the supplier of that equipment:
We are also getting a price for the podium which may be covered by the above numbers but we haven't
confirmed that.
The price we obtained for a curved table in wood was $15,938 which we feel is very high and can be
reduced to approximately $13,000. That design conceals all of the TV wiring within the table
construction and has all of the preparation work necessary for the monitors. If it is segmented
(straight sections approximately 4' wide positioned to form a curved shape) and if the wiring can be
run exposed under the desktop, it can be reduced to $11,000.
The masonry appears to be not only less expensive while maintaining the curved shape, but I feel it is
more appropriate and hope the council will give it serious consideration. The podium would be wood in
order to be obviously a piece of-furniture.
I don't know of any more additional costs for the project and want to remind you that there is a credit
of $10,875 due the city for the remainder of the landscape allowance which is included in the Graus
contract. There is enough left in the Graus contract to go .either way with the table. If you have any
questions please let me know.
• *nesr
O' rien, AIA
WILLIAMS/O'BRIEN ASSOCIATES INC: 1111 THIRD AVENUE SOUTH, SUITE 156 MINNEAPOLIS, MN 55404
ARCHITECTS/PLANNERS
612-338-8981 FAX 612-338-9982
