Planning Commission Regular Meeting Minutes
October 21, 1997
Page 2
Ms. Moore-Sykes introduced Shawn McAlpine from the Salvation Army Silver Lake Camp
and stated he was present this evening to present changes to the camp's long range plan. The
camp is'proposing to demolish two buildings, construct a multi-purpose building and a storage
building for equipment.
Mr. McAlpine thanked the Planning Commission for the opportunity to appear and present an
overview of what is going on and what is proposed for the Silver Lake Camp. The camp has
hired a planning consultant and is in the process of updating their existing long range plan.
The removal of the recreation hall is in the current plan but the removal of the girl's staff
dormitory is not. The camp will be removing both buildings to allow the change of location
of a proposed multi-purpose building. Another proposed change in the long range plan is the
construction of a pole barn 30 x 60 x 12 for storage of maintenance equipment and supplies.
This pole barn will eliminate the outside storage of equipment which can be seen from Silver
Lake Road due to the removal of trees during the street widening.
Commissioner Franzese questioned the time line of this construction.
Mr. McAlpine stated that the demolition of the two buildings could take place within the next
month. The pole barn will be a spring project and it will be at least 18 months before the
multi-purpose building will be constructed.
Commissioner Franzese asked how far out the long range plan projected.
Mr. McAlpine stated the long range plan is a 10 year plan. The camp has initiated 8 of the
13 phases of implementation of the current plan and felt it was time to review and determine
the next set of goals.
Chair Bergstrom complimented the Silver Lake Camp on its efforts both philosophically and
in development. He stated this is a nice facility and noted how nicely the buildings on the
site flow with each other.
Commissioner Franzese asked Mr. McAlpine if he had noticed more water on the Silver Lake
Camp grounds recently.
Mr. McAlpine stated that on some areas there appeared to be even less water than before.
There has been however, considerably more water on the Silver Lake Road side of the
property. He attributed this to water which previously ran directly into Silver Lake now
being piped further north on Silver Lake Road.
Chair Bergstrom thanked Mr. McAlpine for the opportunity to discuss the changes to the
camp's long range plan.
2.
