Planning Commission Meeting Minutes
May 15, 2001
Page 2
VIII. COMMITTEE REPORTS.
8.1 Report of Sign Subcommittee City Monument Sign Recommendation.
Assistant City Manager Sue Henry explained that the Planning Committee met with the City
Council and discussed the City Monument sign. The consensus was to go ahead with the city
electronic monument sign, justifying public purposes as the reason. Ms. Henry indicated that the
decision requires a city ordinance change.
Ms. Henry continued that the public hearing on the ordinance would take place on June 19, 2001,
if the Planning Commission agreed to pursue the ordinance change. Ms. Henry added that the
Council would then have three hearings on the case on June 26,July 10, and July 24, 2001.
Ms. Henry reviewed the different locations that have been suggested for sign placement.
Vice Chair Stille explained that they would have their own public meeting on June 19`h
_ indicating that the Commission has time to further discuss the recommendation before it is due to
go before the Council.
Commissioner Tillmann stated she would like to review this sign in relation to the other signs in
town, and establish the way that electronic signs will be treated in other areas of the City of St.
Anthony.
Vice Chair Stille stated that the Commission needed to establish where these signs for public
information should be allowed. He mentioned recreational property, commercial property, or
city-owned property, and asked for input from the Commissioners.
Commissioner Hanson noted that the Stonehouse sign is not on property owned by the City of St.
Anthony. He stated he feels that the new City sign should be on recreational land.
Commissioner Thomas thought public property would be the best option for sign placement. He
asked the Commission if they would want to allow government agencies, or the school to have a
proliferation on these kinds of signs.
Vice Chair Stille indicated that all of these points have been discussed at the subcommittee
meetings. He requested a motion with regard to electronic signs for public purposes. Then
suggested the subcommittee set a date for a meeting to further discuss the ideas mentioned.
Commissioner Thomas asked if there would be some type of consensus at the public hearings.
Commissioner Tillmann stated that she was in favor of wording the ordinance with "city
property". Vice Chair Stille agreed.
Commissioner Tillmann asked if the Council would be approving the funding to hire a designer
to design the sign at the next City Council meeting.
