PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING
JANUARY 19, 1993
3 PAGE 11
4
5
6 Chair Faust suggested the City Council , at its annual
7 retreat , address non-conforming signs as well as sign
8 ordinance enforcement .
9
10 Commissioner Madden inquired as to the response from the
11 City Council regarding the illegal signs at Stop ' N'
12 Shop. Commissioner Murphy, who attended the Council
13 Meeting where these signs were discussed, advised they
14 did not discuss this illegality. He noted that the
15 Council unanimously approved the "B5" type of sign for
16 this business .
17
18 Commissioner Madden observed that even though there is a
19 newly approved sign ordinance the City Council has
20 already approved illegal signs in a Comprehensive Sign
21 Plan . He suggested the Planning Commission should no
22 longer discuss signs .
23
24 The Chair also felt the sign ordinance should be enforced
25 and that some enforcement plan should be considered . It
6 should be enforced fairly and firmly was the opinion of
Chair Faust and not have enforcement left to the staff .
He also stated that the Planning Commission should
29 articulate its concerns with enforcement and observed
30 that the Planning Commission has spent considerable time
31 and effort on sign regulations and now there are already
32 violations of the new ordinance. He recognizes that the
33 problems did not happen overnight and will not be solved
34 overnight .
35
36 Commissioner Franzese requested that Urbia obtain the
37 City' s policy regarding sign code enforcement and
38 implementation. Commissioner Werenicz had requested this
39 information several months ago and he felt enforcement
40 was a process of notifications . He stated that . an
41 ordinance is a law and it is being broken in the City and
42 should be enforced.
43
44 Commissioner Franzese noted that the subcommittee on the
45 sign ordinance had spent considerable time on developing
46 a workable sign ordinance and had reviewed ease of
47 enforcement . Commissioner Murphy felt that presently
48 there is uneven enforcement or no enforcement .
49
50
