ain thop
illa e
Administrative Offices
3301 Silver Lake Road, St. Anthony; Minnesota 55418-1699
(612) 789-8881 FAX (612) 781-9323
June 25, 1997
Mr. William Soth
Attorney at Law
DORSEY & WHITNEY
Pillsbury Center South
220 South Sixth Street
Minneapolis, MN .55402-1498
Dear Bill:
Enclosed please find for your review copies of two proposed revisions to the City's Zoning
Ordinance regarding professional and medical buildings. This issue came up as the result of
the Wirth Companies request to allow medical laboratories in the Apache Medical
building. The Ordinance states that labs are only allowed in the Light Industrial Zoning
District; the Apache Medical building is in the Commercial District.
Shortly after that request, the City received a request from the Wirth" Companies to put
several wall signs on the south side of the building. Their attorney, Doug Berg, has drafted
a sign plan and a proposed sign ordinance for professional and medical buildings.
Please review these proposals and let me know what you think about them. Jeff Wirth,
Wirth Companies, would like the Planning Commission to review them at the July 15th
Planning Commission meeting and the first reading of the revisions at the July 22nd
Council Meeting.
Also, I have enclosed a proposed revision to the City's Sign Ordinance regarding ground
signs. This Spring we had a resident erect a ground sign in front of his home advertising
his family daycare. Larry asked him to remove the sign; the resident refused stating that
the City Ordinance allows ground signs in all districts. The Planning Commission would
like to restrict ground signs in the residential districts.
