Parks Commission Meeting Minutes
January 29, 2001
Page 3
Jensen stated he does not think the concession stand will be opened a lot, unless there is a
weekend tournament event. He commented that running a concession stand takes a lot of
planning.
Zurbey stated he thinks the key issue is the bathrooms and how that can be incorporated into the
football area so satellites are not needed.
Jensen stated he sees potential for high school booster groups to use the concession stand in the
spring. Then it would make sense to have a parent booster group to organize the concession
stand.
Skrivseth arrived at 6:10 p.m.
Molly Olivier, architect from Short,Elliot, Hendrikson(SEH),was available via a speaker
telephone connection.
Jindra stated the consensus of the Commission is to proceed with a combined shelter with the
concession stand connected to the building and facing south. She stated questions have been
raised about the price and having more picnic tables.
Ms. Olivier explained that she has to lay out the tables to provide ADA access around the tables.
Jindra suggested that an area be extended to allow additional space for tables.
Mr. Kost stated the building is 130 feet long with the patio space. He noted the wading and play
areas are to the north so it may be a good idea to have the additional seating area in that location.
Jindra stated they talked about making a more formal entrance to the park. Mr. Kost stated they
did talk about that as well as the need for ADA access and possibly the location of some stairs.
Jindra asked for a price estimate. Ms. Olivier stated the main body of the building is 2,241
square feet at$150 per foot, the pavilion is 1,131.5 square feet at$75 per square foot, the
concrete pad would be $15 per square foot, and the area underneath the roof is at.$50 per square
foot. Ms.Olivier stated this would total $499,367.50 plus a 10%contingency fee. She reviewed
the types of building materials that would be included.
Jindra asked about installing conduit at this time for possible future use. Ms. Olivier stated she
did include the placement of J-box and conduit so it could be wired in the future.
Jindra reviewed the costs for the Fridley park shelter which included demolition. Ms. Olivier
stated she did not explore the cost of demolition and suggested they first determine under which
contract that could occur.
