-3- <br /> The Council then reviewed the statistics the Police Chief had' provi-ded to support ' <br /> the recruitment of a new police officer' as an early replacement for Officer <br /> Puffer who plans to retire early next year. <br /> There was an indepth discussion of those figures -as welt/ as the difficulty of <br /> getting good qualified men or women to fill the slots left vacant by the impending <br /> retirement of Officer Puffer and the retirement of Officer Schwalbach a few days <br /> previously. The perceived ,advantages of rotating the four young officers for <br /> training in investigations was also explored and the -Chief gave the advantages he <br /> saw for having had two officers riding a .squad at 'the--same time. Chief Hickerson <br /> indicated that- he would need at least a month to recruit a new officer and three <br /> months to complete his or her traini-ng- before February lst, after which he said <br /> he perceived a full complement of staff would have been accomplished without <br /> much added expense. His own retirement plans after 30 years of service were <br /> -discussed with the Police Chief before the following: <br /> Motion by' Councilmember Marks and seconded by Councilmember Enrooth to proceed <br /> with the early replacement of Officer.
