' and made her realize all over again "just how beautiful St. Anthony
really is" . She said she had spent from 11 :00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
with the Finnish visitors, one of whom was a professional photographer
• who was taking slides for showing on cable T.V. when he returned
to Finland, a copy of which he promised to send back to St. Anthony
after he returned home.
Councilmember Ranallo said he and Councilmember Marks had joined
the party for lunch at Scarpelli ' s in Apache and during the conversation
they had learned just how many similarities St. Anthony shared
with its Sister City, including the conversion of an elementary
school building for lack of students to a City Hall, a lake in
Salo which also has an island in the middle and condominium projects,
which almost matched those in St. Anthony. Mayor Sundland said
the Finnish exchange student who had visited in his home had
been more impressed with the private homes in St'. Anthony than
with the condos which were quite common in Salo. Other similarities
between the two cities were the cul-de-sacs which St. Anthony
had developed about ten yers later than Salo and the fact that
both cities had municipal liquor stores.
Councilmember Enrooth reported thoroughly enjoying himself on
"the first annual fishing fun fest" on Lake Michigan, which had
been reported in the July 15th staff notes, and the Councilmember
said he hoped the event would be scheduled again next year.
Mayor Sundland indicated he had attended the retirement party
for Officer Schwalbach the previous Sunday and had commended
• the retiree for the years of dedicated service he had given to
the City.
Councilmember Ranallo reported getting a call from a resident
who indicated she was speaking for her neighbors in urging the
City to continue beautification projects like Trillium Park but
at the same time were requesting the grass growing in the highway
media in the same area be cut. The Councilmember said the caller
had also suggested a greater effort be made to keep the community
bulletin board up to date.
Councilmember Marks reported the Youth Service Bureau was in
the process of planning a Tenth Anniversary observance which
would include a conference on changes in family demograhics,
a breakfast for school personnel involved with Bureau activities,
and an awards banquet_ at night with Minneapolis Police Chief
Tony Bouza as the featured speaker. The Councilmember also reported
he and the City Manager had met with the Chemical Abuse Information
Committee that morning and Mr. Childs had provided some input
related to the restructuring of the Committee. Councilmember
Marks said it had been a real pleasure for him to meet the gentlemen
from Salo. He also reported one of the visitors had shown him
a Xerox copy of an article about St. Anthony which had run in
Salo.
The June Fire Department and May and June Financial reports were
• . ordered filed as informational as was the Hance report related
to matters the prosecutors had conducted at Hennepin County Municipal
