Regular Council Meeting January 22, 1991 page 3 made at the Chamber' s Annual Dinner on April 5th at Jax Cafe. 2 A member of the Council inquired if Bob Sundland would be eligible to 4 be nominated. Mayor Ranallo responded that the award will not be 5 made to a deceased resident of the community. This matter had been discussed by Chamber members. 7 R The Mayor noted that the Chamber of Commerce awards a scholarship 9 annually in Bob' s name. The scholarship is for $1 ,000 and is given 10 to a student who is a resident of St. Anthony and is pursuing a career 11 in Public Administration or Political Science. Another scholarship is 12 also awarded to a graduate of St. Anthony High School and another 13 for Bob Sundland's memory. Iy i4The Mayor advised that both the Bulletin and the Northeaster will be 15 16 receiving information on the Villager of the Year Award. 17 17 Mayor Ranallo had. recently met with a group of suburban mayors to discuss 19 the Fiscal Disparities Act. The group voted unanimously not to pursue 20 this matter as they felt there were more important issues to be addressed. 21 22 As a representative of the League of Minnesota Cities Federal Legislation �3 Committee, Mayor Ranallo met with Representative Jim Ramstad to discuss 24 the purpose and charge of the League. Originally, all newly-elected 5 federal representatives of the State had been invited to attend this 2 • 25 meeting. Representative Ramstad was the only one to attend the meeting. 27 27Ann Higgins, the League' s Federal Liaison on legislative activities, 78�9 also attended the meeting. The League' s purpose and the purpose of the 30 National League of Cities was explained and was well received by Rep- 31 resentative Ramstad. 32 33 b. Councilmember Wagner's Report Councilmember Wagner attended the orientation- program sponsored by the 34 35 Ramsey County League of Local Governments. He felt all of the information 36 was useful and the format for presentation was very effective. 37 c. Councilmember Fleming' s Report Councilmember Fleming also attended the orientation program sponsored by 39 39the Ramsey County League of Local Governments. She found the comments 40 41 made by Mayor Benke particularly interesting. He addressed the issue 42 of demographics specifically in the area of baby boomers who have children 43 whose interests may be steered into volunteerism. 44 LS Councilmember Fleming noted that Mayor Benke cautioned that discontent 46 of the population may be focused on local elected officials. 47 47 Mayor Benke also advised that members of volunteer fire departments are 49 beginning to view their participation on this line of volunteering as So
