City Council Regular Meeting Minutes
January 25, 2000
• Page 8
1 Horst reported that he had been invited to attend a luncheon meeting with the Coalition for
2 Smoking Prevention. The focus was on efforts to curb youth smoking and the uses of the to-
3 bacco settlement money. Horst felt the meeting was interesting and informative.
4 Mayor Cavanaugh reported that he had attended a retreat for ACTION (Adults and Children
5 Together in our Neighborhood). The organization facilitates asset building in our youth, and he
6 felt the information presented was beneficial.
7 Cavanaugh reported that the Metropolitan Transit is in the process of redefining their routes. In
8 that process, Bus No. 25 will be eliminated from the Shopping Center to 33rd. The route will
9 combine No. 25 with No. 1 over on Stinson. The route will proceed up Stinson to 33rd, then go
10 33rd to Silver Lake, and then Silver Lake to Apache. The other part is that the MTC is
11 increasing the service on Lowry Avenue, so that the service that runs from Roseville and comes
12 into the Village and proceeds on Kenzie and to Lowry is designed to get southend passengers
13 onto the Lowry bus to transfer at Stinson.
14 Cavanaugh reported that there is a public hearing scheduled for February 8, 2000 from 12:00
15 1:00 p.m. at the downtown public library, with the proposed changes taking effect in September
41 2000. Morrison offered that residents in the past have testified at MTC hearings.
17 Sparks inquired if there was an appeal process. Cavanaugh stated that the City could write a let-
18 ter and request a meeting with the MTC to discuss numbers and discuss the possibility of re-es-
19 tablishing service.
20 In the interim, Cavanaugh suggested that City Manager Mike Mornson contact the MTC by
21 writing a letter expressing our concerns.
22 On a different issue, Cavanaugh reported that he had been given a brochure for the Minneapolis
23 Mediation Program. A resident who was upset with a neighbor previously had contacted him,
24 and he was pleased that he could refer the resident to that organization for mediation.
25 Morrison clarified that he is aware of the service and that, typically, cities retain the services of
26 such an organization and then provide that benefit to the residents.
27 XIII. INFORMATION AND ANNOUNCEMENTS.
28 None.
29 XIV. ADJOURNMENT.
30 Motion by Horst to adjourn the meeting at 8:34 p.m.
Motion carried unanimously.
