STATE OF MINNESOTA JUVENILE DELINQUENCY PREVENTION
ENERGY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION FOR MINI-GRANT
• JUSTICE GRANT PROGRAM PAGE 2
PROJECT TITLE:
SCHOOL AWARENESS GROUPS
IMPLEMENTING AGENCY: St. Anthony Village School District 4282
SPONSORING UNIT OF GOVERNMENT: City of St. Anthony Village
10.- PROGRAM SUMMARY.
PROJECT PURPOSE: To provide appropriate group and individual activities for students
and their families, in a small suburban community, which will model and encourage
appropriate social and life skills.
In recent years, our school district has been asked to assume substantially more
responsibility for behavior that can be classified as pre-delinquent behavior and
petitionable problem behavior. We wish to deal with this before it becomes a larger
problem in our school community. Our data indicates from Grade 5 thru 12, we have
had over 65 .suspensions of 1 to 5 days resulting from chemical use (smoking,
• drinking, etc.) truancy excessive absences and unexcused absences (including runaways) .
Through our proposed group work, we wish to strengthen the home, school, community,
and peer ties to appropriately deal with problems prior to their becoming more
volatile within our educational programs. 'Operating peer groups within the school
base where we can address school behaviors as they result from home and community
problems seems to be an appropriate and effective way to strengthen positive social
and life skills.
MAJOR PROGRAM FEATURES: This program will make use of peer support groups, role
playing, modeling, and the provision of strategies and techniques for coping with
situations that may lead to problem behaviors. Home, school, and community
relationships will be strengthened through group support meetings involving parents,
students, and community agency members. "
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
1. - Provide support groups that will:
(a) be made up of heterogeneous groups of students in Grades 5 thru 12.
Students and their families will be provided with appropriate group and
individual activities dependent upon the level of social support that they
• have and the severity of their problems.
(b) Deal with immediate and long range concerns of students as they relate to
appropriate citizenship behaviors.
