Planning Commission Report
L Commissioner Dennis Murphy was in attendance to report on the February
19, 1991 Planning Commission meeting.
R
1 . Sign Variance Request from Marquette Bank
Marquette Bank has purchased the former Midwest Federal Building just east
of Apache Plaza. Marquette Bank is requesting a variance for two additional
signs. Midwest Federal had three signs at this location before it sold the
building.
i4
The City sign ordinance allows for one identification sign up to 150 square
feet per commercial establishment . Marquette Bank feels the three signs
)7 are necessary because of the bank' s location on a corner and the building',s
round structure. Three signs are also necessary to make the bank visible
to traffic heading north and south on Silver Lake Road and also to shoppers
at Apache Plaza.

The Bank' s logo will be on the sign and the word "Apache" will be added
to "Marquette Bank." Although the total signage dimensions of the
Midwest Federal signs was not available it was felt the Marquette Bank' s
signage may be smaller as there would not be extra space necessary for
the logo.

A representative of the Marquette Bank stated that the firm also plans
on altering the appearance of the building as it is now with different
color paint and may be some other siding.

The Planning Commission recommended approval of the sign variance request .

Motion by Fleming, second by Enrooth to approve the variance request of
Marquette Bank Apache, 3928 Silver Lake Road, for two additional signs as
described in the Notice of Hearing; noting that no one appeared to object
to the granting of the variance; that the -conditions needed for approval
of the variance request have been satisfied; that the bank site is unique
in that only one of the three signs will be seen at a time; that the bank
will enhance the identity of Apache Mall ; and might help to draw customers
to the area in general ; that the simple architecture of the building will
be enhanced by the proposed signage; that the amount of signage will not be
more than the pre-existing signage; and that the hours of illumination
be from dusk to 1 :00 a.m. .
LS "
Motion carried unanimously

The representative of the bank advised the Council that the bank is
presently promoting a project named "Desert Aid."
