CITY OF ST. ANTHONY
PARKS ADVISORY TASK FORCE MEETING SUMMARY
Monday, August 18, 1997
7:00 P.M.
Conference Room
I. CALL TO ORDER.
II. OPENING REMARKS.
Bob Kost, BRW, Inc. introduced the evening's agenda.
III. REPORT ON STATUS OF CITY'S PARKS.
Reviewed inventory of Parks as provided in mailed packets. The task force will be
taking a walking tour of Central Park at the September 15th meeting.
IV. REPORT ON USES OF PARKS.
Kathy Knapp, Community Services, reviewed the needs for the Parks for
Community Services programs. She indicated that the children in the childcare
programs use Central Park, which is a problem for the children in pre-school and
most in the daycare. This equipment is designed for elementary age children.
Children going to Central Park also run the, risk of being hit with softballs from
practicing teams, especially softball fields 1 and 3.
Community Services also schedules adult softball teams at Central Park. This year,
they have 18 teams, which is down considerably from the past. They have tried to
encourage adult teams to schedule league play on the weekends, but has been very
difficult. These teams continue to want to play during the week. She reiterated
that there is a shortage of fields for both adults and children.
Jan Jenson, Sports Boosters, presented a report on the activities that Sports Boosters
organizes for the youth. They provide opportunities for children to play organized
sports such as tee ball, soccer, football and softball. Most activities are co-ed, but as
the children get older, girls play more softball and are very active in soccer. Boys
play more football and soccer.
Outdoor sports run from April to mid-October or early November. Mr. Jenson
reported that the number of kids wanting to participate is increasing, especially for
soccer. He also indicated that they use the fields on most weekends and they are
booked from 3:00 P.M. to dark.
Gary Palm, St. Anthony High School Athletics, reported that tennis, soccer and
football are very popular. Because of this, he could use more tennis courts and
fields for soccer and football. Currently, the St. Anthony soccer program is run in
conjunction with Spring Lake Park.
