City Council Meeting Minutes <br /> February 9, 1999 • <br /> Page 4 <br /> 1 problems faced by high school students. He stated that an issue at the forefront of the coalition's <br /> 2 agenda is expanding resources for after-school programs, and encouraged residents to become <br /> ____J__ involved with the coalition. He added students have expressed frustration over the lacka <br /> 4 activities available within the community, and Perkins is their biggest attraction. <br /> 5 <br /> 6 Cavanaugh reported on his participation in the substitute teacher program at Wilshire Park <br /> 7 School organized by Bonnie Brever in which volunteers provide enrichment programs for <br /> 8 students in place of their regular teachers. He stated he had talked to the students about public <br /> 9 transportation. He encouraged interested residents to consider participation in the program, and <br /> 10 applauded Ms. Brever at Wilshire Park School for her efforts. <br /> 11 <br /> 12 Ranallo stated he had received feedback from the high school student council with regard to lack <br /> 13 of available after-school activities, and had also been informed about Perkins. He added the <br /> 14 students indicated they would not consider utilizing the community room at City Hall because <br /> 15 they don't want to go to a facility governed by the school or the City. <br /> 16 <br /> 17 Marks reported on his attendance at a recent meeting of the Sister City Association which is <br /> 18 currently involved in planning for 3 events: a visit from a Salo, Finland folk dance group which <br /> 19 will include some venues within the City; an art exchange between schools in Salo, Finland and <br /> 20 St. Anthony which includes a grant request submission to the Finlandia Foundation; and the <br /> 21 development of economic exchange between the two cities. <br /> 22 <br /> 23 Faust reported that he is watching the legislature closely and has nothing to report upon which <br /> 24 might require the City's mobilization. <br /> 25 <br /> 26 Thuesen reported on his involvement in the Wilshire Park School's substitute teacher program, <br /> 27 adding he had provided a lesson on city government and attempted to give the students real life <br /> 28 examples. He added he hopes there are future leaders among the community's youth. <br /> 29 <br /> 30 D. Mayor. <br /> 31 Ranallo stated the cable television station has had some difficulty transmitting the Council <br /> 32 meetings for the past few weeks but the problems will be rectified. He added the cable company <br /> 33 is working with the high school which has some unused cable equipment and cable classes <br /> 34 should be available at the high school soon. <br /> 35 <br /> 36 E. City Manager. <br /> 37 Mornson reported that the City's employee recognition luncheon will be held March 10, 1999 <br /> 38 from 11:30 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. <br /> 39 <br />
