Planning Commission Meeting Minutes <br /> October 19, 2004 <br /> Page 7 <br /> Motion by Commissioner Gray, seconded by Vice Chair Hanson, to recommend a 60-day <br /> 2 extension to more thoroughly study this issue. <br /> 3 _Motion Carried Unanimously <br /> 4 <br /> 5 Chair Stromgren stated this would go before Council for approval noting that this only a 60-day . <br /> 6 extension for further study. He explained that the Planning Commission is looking for additional <br /> 7 information regarding any legal issues, zoning impacts and ramifications. He stated that the <br /> 8 Commission would also like it clarified as to whether the other buildings would require <br /> 9 conditional use permits or are they included in the rezoning. <br /> 10 <br /> 11 VIII.- CONCEPT REVIEW <br /> 12 <br /> 13 8.1 Sunset Memorial Park Sign <br /> 14 <br /> 15 Robb Walker, Lawrence Signs, stated that he represents the Alderwoods-Group on all signage. <br /> 16 He stated that they are requesting approval for the proposed size of the sign. He explained that <br /> 17 their purpose is to try and provide visibility and a way to find the cemetery. He stated that the <br /> 18 proposed sign, included in their package for review, has a square footage that was designed to <br /> 19 fall underneath the maximum allowed and is based on one face of the sign. He stated that it was <br /> 20 clarified that the measurement requirements should incorporate each face of the sign and is <br /> 21 included in the calculation. He stated that considering the site lines and speed of traffic that this <br /> - . sign would be marginally acceptable to the standpoint of visibility. He stated that they are <br /> looking for feedback and input from the Planning Commission adding that if they need to request <br /> 24 a variance that would address the size and location they could take care of that for the next <br /> 25 meeting. <br /> 26 <br /> 27 Commissioner Tillman stated that this sign looks a lot like.the other one. She expressed <br /> 28 concerns stating that everything else is so beautiful and then you see this big plastic and metal <br /> 29 illuminated sign. She asked if there would be a way for them to soften the look or blend it better <br /> 30 with the area. She asked if they would consider including a stone base. <br /> 31 <br /> 32 Commissioner Young agreed stating that she is very disappointed to see the granite marker go <br /> 33 down in front of the building as it was very in tune with the other structures. She expressed <br /> 34 concerns stating that the-proposed sign is very different from the rest of the cemetery. Mr. <br /> 35 Walker explained that the proposed sign is consistent with the Alderwoods Group branding used <br /> 36 for all of their locations. <br /> 37 <br /> 38 Chair Stromgren acknowledged that corporations have standards and asked if the Alderwoods <br /> 39 Group would consider making any adjustments for context. . <br /> 40 <br /> 41 Commissioner Young agreed and asked if the Alderwoods Group is concerned with the context <br /> 42 and in being a good neighbor. She stated that she understands the issues concerning corporate <br /> 43 branding adding that she would not recognize this as their standard. She asked if they would <br /> consider placing a granite base on the sign. She noted that the base should be the same width as <br /> 4� the sign itself. <br /> 46 <br />
