4 City Council Regular Meeting Minutes March 24, 2015 Page 4 Motion carried unanimously. D. St Anthony Police Department Annual Report John Ohl Police Chief, presenting. 5 Police Chief Ohl presented the 2014 Police Department annual report and discussed "Safety 6 through Service" and the importance of service as the core principle of the Police Department. 7 He advised there were 267 Part I crimes in 2014, a decrease of 140 from 2013, and 198 Part II 8 crimes in 2014, a decrease of 18 from 2013. He reminded citizens they should not hesitate to 9 call the police if they see something suspicious and the Police Department appreciates the 10 contact with citizens. He advised the Police Department wrote over 2,000 moving violations, 11 over 300 non - moving violations, and made 880 arrests during 2014; when combining the cities 12 of Falcon Heights and Lauderdale, the Police Department had over 1,900 arrests, issued 5,675 13 citations, received over 11,000 calls for service, and there were 369 Part I offenses and 361 Part 14 II offenses. He stated the Police Department handled 465 criminal cases and cleared a total of 15 253 cases for a clearance rate of 54 %. He stated that Lieutenant Scholl handles the education 16 requirements that included training in firearms, diversity awareness, juvenile sex trafficking and 17 exploitation, as well as leadership training. He stated that Sergeant Spiess is in charge of the 18 police reserve program and the City is fortunate to have a high quality police reserve program 19 and the reserves volunteered 2,356 hours in 2014. He discussed the crime prevention program 20 run by Sergeant Mangseth that includes the Summer Survival School, a popular program run by 21 Officer South. He stated the Police Department annual report is available on the website and 22 includes letters from citizens that are proof that the Police Department is making a difference in 23 the communities of St. Anthony, Falcon Heights, and Lauderdale. 24 25 Councilmember Jenson commended Police Chief Ohl and his staff for all their accomplishments 26 and the significant amount of outreach programs. He thanked Police Chief Ohl and his entire 27 staff for their dedicated service to the community. 28 29 Councilmember Stille thanked Police Chief Ohl for another great year and encouraged citizens to 30 read the Police Department annual report, particularly the message from the Chief and the letters 31 at the back of the report. 32 33 Councilmember Brever thanked Police Chief Ohl and the Police Department for their dedicated 34 service and for their outreach to kids, students, and everyone in the community. 35 36 Councilmember Gray stated he has frequently heard complimentary comments from residents of 37 Falcon Heights and Lauderdale about the Police Chief and the entire Police Department. He 38 thanked Police Chief Ohl and the Police Department for their commitment and service. 39 40 Mayor Faust expressed heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Police Chief Ohl and the entire 41 Police Department on behalf of the City Council and as a resident for their first class quality 42 service to everyone in the community. 43 44 VII. REPORTS FROM CITY MANAGER AND COUNCIL MEMBERS. 45 46 City Manager Casey reported on his attendance at a meeting regarding the Highway Safety 47 Improvement program.
