4
TO: Mike Morrison
FROM: Kathy Knapp ("The General ')
DATE: April 8, 1997
RE: Your request for comments of preliminary plans for the foyer.
Mike, I discussed the proposed foyer plans with staff and they expressed the following
issues.
1. Concerns about the flags used as weapons.
2. Concerns about the flags being free standing and the potential
for vandalism.
3. Concerns that children will hang off the proposed wall hanging
planned for the right of the fountain.
4. Concerns regarding the numbers, sizes, and combinations of benches
and chairs that may crowd the lobby and interfere with current senior
citizen activities. (Some of the Seniors prefer their activities in
• the foyer because of its location relative to the bathrooms, the
added light, and pleasant atmosphere. They do not want to be moved
into an inside room at this time.)
5. Concerns that if the plants on the top of the wall aren't permanently
attached, that children will pull them down. (Currently we have
noticed that kids have been playing in the fountain, removing the
brass splash guards and dropping them in the basin below. These
are not children enrolled in child care but have been children who
have come into the building with their parents.) Anything decorative
that is free standing or in reach of young children and teens appears to
be fair game. I would suggest this be a consideration in the design.
6. A pay phone or two need to be installed in the area designated for
them. (You may already be doing this, but I am unaware what is
happening.)
Thanks Mike for including us. I think I can speak for all the staff that we look forward to
upgrades and improvements that the City has planned. We are only concerned that good
money not be spent on items that can be vandalized.
•
