MEMORANDUM
DATE: August 17, 1998
TO: Mike Morrison, City Manager
FROM: Richard Johnson, Fire Chief
ITEM: NEW FIRE STATION ISSUES
Construction costs for new fire stations are currently $94 - $100 per square foot.
A new fire station at a central location would require 9,000 square feet which
would bring the cost of construction to about $900,000. Archictect fees,
engineering, and site preparation would add 10 - 15% to this cost which means
$1.2 million for a new station housing all of our rolling stock. Building a new
station on one end of the city with a substation at the other end would reduce the
size of the main building by about 500 square feet with a corresponding reduction
in cost. If the station is built on private land, land acquisition would add to the
overall cost._
As for location, a centrally located site would be ideal. However, there is
precious little available space left in this area. Other options would include
Trillium Park, the space south of Twin City Federal (private), the space east of
Custom Industrial Products on 37th (also private), and the public works site. Of
these four options, the public works site presents the greatest problems in terms
of safety and accessibility. Traffic lights with a pre-emption system (Opticon) on
Chandler and 37th would be an absolute neccesity to prevent serious accidents at
that location. A pre-emption system at 37th and Silver Lake Road would also be
helpful, as a majority of our runs would now be through this intersection from a
blind-sided direction. Any of the mentioned options would require a substation
such as we have now to accomodate firefighters living at the other end of town.
