4 •
man who intended to enjoy many summer days relaxing upon it with his family. Much
effort has also gone into the design of the landscaping around our home which consists of
100 - 14 inch flowering shrubs, eight beautiful trees of various variety, and 16 Colorado
blue spruce, planted in 1980 as mere sticks which now tower at 20 feet. I have planted
over 800 tulip bulbs in my flower gardens. This kind of effort is not put into just a house,
but into a home by home owners who take pride in the place where their family has
grown and hopes to continue to grow.
My husband works just across the street from our home in the St. Anthony Industrial Park
and walks to work each day. My mother is buried directly across the street, her grave in
view of my front door. Our daughter lives at home and commutes to the U of M each
day. Our son will be graduating from high school this year and is planning to go away to
college next fall. We have always vowed that our children will have their HOME to come
back to for the weekends, summer and holidays.
For the council to recklessly ignore this emotional distinction between a house and a
home is most certainly negligent, and of this fact I urge you to be well aware.
We feel that we have been very patient thus far with the filth, noise and inconvenience of
the construction surrounding our home. Our house is so completely covered with dirt that
it will need to be scrubbed by hand in the spring. We have had our carpet cleaned, as well
as our vents and ducts, in order to elevate the ill effects from the dust and mold of a
. construction site upon my allergies. I now take medication for these allergies twice daily
and also receive two injections weekly. The road in front of the house is rutted and
encrusted with mounds of dirt. Now, after all of this, to find that removal of our home is
under consideration brings us to point at which we are forced to speak and be heard Our
house is our home and it is not for sale.
My husband attended the planning meeting of February the I5th. There he learned that the
Shopping Center is now sold. In light of this, we ask you for the truth. What are the
council's plans for Saint Anthony Village and its residents? Where is the vision? Is your
concern really to build a 100 year flood protection plan? Or is it possible that we are
unaware of underlying developments? The people of our community want and must
know what plans exist for the future, for it is our city as well as yours.
One longtime resident questioned at the last council meeting, "Which one of you is
getting paid under the table?" The comment may have seemed cynically humorous at
the time, now has lost its humor. Understandably, the role of each city council member
is one of responsibility and weight. However, it is also a role undertaken by each
member of his own free will. And may I remind you each that it is a role-that is under
close observation by the members of the community, including those who reside in those
homes you have suggested removing.
In closing, be informed that we have been advised of our rights by our attorney, John
iBanagan.
