CITY OF ST. ANTHONY
COUNCIL MINUTES
January 2811975
• The meeting was called to order by Mayor Miedtke at 7:30 P.M.
The following were present at roll call: Haik, Sauer, Sundland, Miedtke, and
Stauffer.
Also present: Jerry Dulgar, City Manager
Larry Vickrey, City Attorney
Jim Fornell, Adm. Asst.
Motion by Councilman Sundland, seconded by Councilman Stauffer to approve the
minutes of the January 7, 1975 Council meeting.
Motion carried unanimously.
Motion by Councilman Haik, seconded by Councilman Sauer to approve the minutes of
the January 14, 1975 Council meeting.
Motion carried unanimously.
Jerry Cowan of the Human Relations Committee was present to answer any questions
the Council might have regarding the Committee minutes of January 21, 1975 and,
when there were no such queries, the minutes were filed.
Mr. Richard Letourneau presented the recommendations carried in the Planning
eZ Board minutes of January 21, 1975. He first expressed the Board's dissatisfact-
• ion with the large lighted sign which Mrs. Carol Brown of the Herfurth Realty Co.
requested a sign variance to erect in front of her office at 3901 Silver Lake Rd.
Mrs. Brown then presented her plans for a modified 25.x+ sq. ft. sign which was 5
feet high and for which she was uncertain of the manner in which it would be
lighted.
Councilman Haik said she would be unhappy with establishing a precedent for any
free standing sign along Silver Lake Road and the mayor said that, since Mrs.
Brown's original presentation of her request to renovate the residence at 3901
Silver Lake Road into a branch office of the realty business indicated a minimum
of "drop in" business, he could see no justification for this type of sign.
There was a discussion of the possibility of only using a sign which would locate
the business and provide those who were looking for it with its name and address.
Motion by Mayor Miedtke, seconded by Councilman Sundland to deny the Herfurth
request for a variance to the sign ordinance to allow a free standing sign in
front of 3901 Silver Lake Road with the intent of maintaining the residential
nature of that area.
Voting on the motion:
Aye: Haik, Sauer, Sundland, Miedtke, Stauffer
Motion carried unanimously.
Letourneau explained the thinking behind the recommendation from the Planning
i Board to allow Mr. R.F. Ingvaldsen to temporarily keep the T.V. repair sign he
now has in his front yard at 3621 Stinson Boulevard. He cited his own reluctance
to establish such a precedent but said it was the final conclusion of the Board
that the sign be allowed because of the hardship aspects of the request.
