ANTHOITY FOR 1977
Plotion carried unanimously.
The Council discussed the January 4 , 1977 recommendations and comments
from Jim Fornell regarding the eligibility determinations and cost
estimates for the remaining proposals which are to be considered
for inclusion in the application for Corntunity Developrent Block Grant
• funds due January 30 , 1977 .
Mrs . Pat Plelius, President of the St. Anthony High School Parents
Group and three other members of the organization were again present
to request that $5,000 of these funds be set aside for a chemical de--
pendency counseling ar.d diversion program which could be set up by
the Johnson Institute for St. Anthony youth and their parents.
firs. "Ielius said she felt the great number of rec:uests for such a
program from parents justified its establishment and replied to
Councilman Stauffer's conjecture that such a program might more ap-
propriately be handled through the school by saying the school could
only handle a third of the problem. Councilman FFaik said she-.wanted
more specifics on the program and those persons who will be respon-
sible for its facilitation in the community. Councilman Sundland
also wanted to know whether there might not be other sources of
funding for the program which would. be available when the grant funds
have run out. Mrs. Violet Dansgard wanted the City to request such
aid from the Governor's Crime Commission but the Administrative
Assistant said his contacts with members of the Commission had indi-
cated a hesitation to giving high priority to these programs because
of the failure of similar ventures in other communities . P".r. Fornell
added that the application for such funds could be made any time
prior to August. Pastors of the Nativity Lutheran and Faith Methodist
churches were suggested. by Councilman Stauffer and Mr. Dulgar as
members of the task force which could study the problem.
• Mayor Pliedtke expressed a willingness on the part of the council to
do something in the area of solving the problem of chemical dependency
among the cormunity's youth even if funding could net be secures'
(3)
