City Council Regular Meeting Minutes
June 26, 2001
• Page 11
1 Anthony would have an electronic sign.
2 Mayor Cavanaugh interjected and reminded Mr. Hansen that the specifics of the sign have
3 gone back to the Planning Commission. He stated that, at the City Council meeting on July 24,
4 2001, they would have a recommendation from the Planning Commission, based on public
5 hearings.
6 Mr. Hansen asked why they are amending the ordinance. Mayor Cavanaugh responded that
7 they are amending the ordinance so that the city can build that kind of sign. Councilmember
s Thuesen stated that he believed that the majority of the residents see that an electronic sign
9 could be beneficial to the City. Councilmember Hodson agreed. Mr. Hansen stated he thought
10 that was untrue.
11 Mayor Cavanaugh continued that the Wilshire sign was not well thought out. Councilmember
12 Thuesen stated that the Wilshire sign was an embarrassment to the City. Mr. Hansen added
13 that the Wilshire sign was out of ordinance.
1 4 Mayor Cavanaugh stated that they were not going to rehash what was going to be a public
s hearing on July 17, 2001.
16 Mr. Hansen said he appreciated their time, but was disappointed with his inability to fully
17 express his concerns with the issues surrounding the sign ordinance.
18 Mayor Cavanaugh stated that Mr. Hansen's comments from the Planning Commission Meeting
19 did accomplish a reshaping of the ordinance by the Legal Council and by the Planning
20 Commission, and that it was a situation where he needed to take one step at a time.
21 XII. REPORTS FROM CITY MANAGER AND COUNCILMEMBERS.
22 City Manager's report:
23 City Manager Momson indicated that they are waiting for the House, Senate and Governor to resolve
24 their differences on the Property Tax Bill. He indicated that they are in limbo until then and that they
25 have their next budget presentation August 14, 2001.
26 Mr. Mornson stated that they have money in their Tax Increment Plan to demolish and remove the
27 Custom Liquidators Building. He added that he would like to have Jay Hartman work with one of their
28 firms to bid it out and see how much it would cost, in case they would have to act fast. Mayor
29 Cavanaugh stated if he thought there were funding, he would still push for a Community Building.
0-
30 Mayor Cavanaugh asked about the letter they received from the League of Minnesota Cities shutdown.
31 Mr. Mornson indicated that they he do not see it having a large impact. However, if the shutdown
32 would go into Labor Day, they may have some issues.
