TRENCHING AND SHORING <br /> A. All utilities in area must be located (call Gopher State #4540002). • <br /> B. Workers exposed to traffic shall wear high visibility clothing (safety vest) and <br /> use proper traffic control devices. <br /> C. Appropriate means of egress shall be provided in all trenches 4' or more <br /> and shall not be farther than 25' from workers. <br /> D. Materials and equipment must be kept 2' from the edge of the excavation. <br /> E. Inspections shall be made by a competent person. <br /> 1. Daily inspections of excavation. <br /> 2. After rain storms and other hazards. <br /> 3. If evidence of unsafe conditions are found, exposed workers shall <br /> not be allowed in the hazardous area until necessary precautions are <br /> taken. <br /> F. Soil classification shall be made through testing by a competent person. <br /> 1. Soil classifications are Type A, Type B, and Type C. • <br /> 2. Soil type will determine slope for digging. <br /> 3. Test to be determined by field testing using a pocket penetrometer, <br /> or thumb penetration test or other recognized method. <br /> G. Protection system choices can be made after soil type has been <br /> determined. <br /> 1. Proper sloping. <br /> 2. Trench shields. <br /> 3. Shoring. <br /> H. Ad soil shall be compacted to specifications when back filling excavation. <br /> I. This policy is good for excavations of 20' or less.
