CHLORINE EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
Standard:
Upon first indication of leakage or other potential chlorine emergency.
A. LEAVE. Turn on exhaust fan, close the door and leave the chlorine area
immediately.
B. RADIO. Radio the Fire Department and the supervisor of the Public Works
Department.
State:
1. Your location.
2. Apparent nature and probable urgency of the problem.
3. Call for a Fire backup unit and an additional chlorine respirator.
C. WAIT. Wait outside for backup.
While waiting:
1. Check that the emergency respirator at the scene is working
properly.
2. Determine if danger is sufficient to warrant evacuating the
surrounding area.
D. Take no action which necessitates entering a chlorine area until a backup
• unit with a properly functioning chlorine respirator is standing by at the
scene (not merely on the way).
Scope:
This standard applies to the individual City employee who may come upon a
potential chlorine hazard lacking the proper equipment, training, or backup
personnel to safely cope with the situation.
Definition:
Any time chlorine is detected where it should not be, constitutes a hazard until
proven otherwise.
Limitation:
This standard applies only to the immediate "first detection" of a potential chlorine
problem, prior to the availability of properly equipped personnel.
CITY OF ST. ANTHONY EMPLOYEE SAFETY MANUAL
• (2/93) Page 27
