(1990)
Introduction:
Michael Lyons, and the author, met on site 12/10/04 to identify and inventory the condition of an
Evergreen Allee of trees on the north end of the main drive of Sunset Cemetery. This does not cover all
the trees in the cemetery or even all of the trees on the allee.Although all of the trees in the Allee were
examined and all suffered from the same symptoms, only the trees adjacent the Chapel at the entry from
St. Anthony Blvd. are within the scope of this document. Sunset Funeral Home&Cemetery is
considering removing these trees to create more parking for a planned enlarged chapel at this location—
cemetery entry. This field investigation portion of this assessment for the 44 trees was completed by the
author on 12/10/04.
Tree Inventory Methodology:
Trees were first identified.Next,DBH(diameter at breast height)and height were measured with a
Cruising Stick. Tree trunks were examined for wounds, calluses, presence/absence of diseases. Root/trunk,
collars were examined for the presence/absence of girdling roots. Scaffold branches attachments were
examined for integrity and included bark. Likely tree senescence or mortality was considered. These
conditions were recorded, with recommendations for the inventoried trees described below.
Following assessment of current conditions, the author calculated projected rates of mortality, based on
research literature by: Din,Hightshoe,Urban. Rates of Growth were calculated for.all trees, based on size
and age class, and species, projected at 60 to 70 years. Likely mortality of urban trees vs. naturally
occurring trees was based on Urban's research. Flint and Harris were the sources used for diseases of
Eastern Red Cedars.
THE KESTREL DESIGN GROUP,INC.5136 Hankerson Avenue,Suite 1 Edina,Minnesota 55436
(952)928-9600 Fax(952)928-1939 www.kestreldesigngroup.com
