STRUCTURAL CONDITION AND RENOVATION POTENTIAL
Exterior
Roof
The roof was inaccessible, so all roofing observations were made from the ground.
Description: The roof is a pitched slate roof with copper
valleys, ridge caps, scuppers, gutters and downspouts.
The roof shape is formed with two intersecting gables.
w ,' There are two one story sections of the building tucked in
the southeast and northeast corners of the plan. These
sections have a slate hipped roof. The southwest and
F northeast corners of the plan have two story sections with
a low pitched roof surrounded by a ante parapet.
Z' P P
Condition: The condition of the roofing or flashing could
not be determined.
Recommendation: The roof needs to be closely examined to make sure that all roof conditions
are sound. Due to the lack of proper access, this assessment could not be done at this time.
Water Shedding System
Description: Water is shed off of the building through the pitch of the roofs. The roofs pitch to
gutters and downspouts on the east side of the building, and scuppers and downspouts on the
west side of the building. Water is then brought to the ground through the downspouts. The
gutters on the east side of the building are intergraded into a decorative cornice at the eaves.
These gutters project just slightly beyond the face of the granite.
Condition: Higher areas of the gutters, downspouts, and scuppers were inaccessible. From the
ground, areas of split or deteriorated copper could be seen. There were isolated areas on the
north and south sides where water had leaked above or below the gutter and spilled out on the
stone wall.
Recommendation: The gutters and downspouts that are cracked and leaking should be repaired
or replaced. When replacing the gutters and downspouts, take care to match existing profiles and
sizes of the existing elements.
Exterior Walls
Description: The administration building is clad in gray granite blocks. These blocks vary in size
and shape, and help define some of the unique characteristics of this compact Gothic style
building. At the base of the building, the granite blocks step out to delineate a foundation and
Sunset Memorial Park Administration Building
Preliminary National Register and Condition Assessment—Page 7
