then continue below grade. The blocks are laid in courses with mortar used in the horizontal
and vertical joints.
Condition: The granite blocks themselves are in very
° good condition. There were no visible areas where the
blocks have cracked or showed signs of deterioration. At
T q the comers of the east elevation, a few of the corner
blocks appear to be loose. It seems that these blocks have
been reset in the past, and the mortar joints have been
$f rye? tuckpointed. On the north side of the building,
specifically near the base of the building where the blocks
step out, there are areas of organic growth staining the
blocks. This condition, to a lesser extent, is also seen on
r some of the piers and corners of the building where a
horizontal surface of a block is exposed.
The mortar joints on the building are in good condition.
t 6 There are a few areas of isolated deterioration on the
W outside comers of the building and where the decorative
' piers project from the building. It appears that excess
water has penetrated the wall system and deteriorated the
joints. This has caused the mortar to become loose and
fall out. This deterioration, however, is isolated.
Recommendation: The building should be selectively
tuckpointed. Any loose granite blocks should be reset
before tuckpointing. Use appropriate cleaning methods
to remove organic growth and stains on the north side of
the building.
Structure
Description: It was difficult to assess the structure of the building. The building appears to be
constructed of concrete walls behind the granite fagade. The first floor has a concrete beam floor
system. The structure of the second floor and the roof is unknown.
Condition: Signs of structural problems usually appear in the finish materials inside the building
or in the cladding materials on the exterior. There were no indications at these locations that
there are problems with the structure of the building.
Recommendations: None.
Sunset Memorial Park Administration Building
Preliminary National Register and Condition Assessment—Page 8
