ornamentation in these windows is integral to the character of the building. All replacement
windows should match the character of the existing windows, including the minor divisions of
the leaded windows. The east windows in the reception hall should be repaired and a new storm
window placed on the outside of each window.
Overall Structural Condition Assessment
The Sunset Memorial Park administration building is in good condition. There are no problems
with the structure of the building. There were some areas of water infiltration through leaks in
the roof, but these areas of deterioration are only affecting the finishes, and not the integrity of
the structure.
The exterior walls are in need of some repair, but these repairs are part of the proper maintenance
of the building. Considering the age of the building, these areas of repair are minor.
The only significant areas of concern are the windows. They are deteriorated and do not prevent
weather from entering the building. Without immediate attention, water that enters the building
through these windows could further affect the condition of the materials surrounding the
windows.
Renovation Potential Assessment
The renovation potential of this building is slightly limited. The limitation is not due to its
condition, but the compact nature of the building. The main space of the building, the reception
hall, is a significant piece of this building both functionally and aesthetically. The most ornate
details and finest finishes are found in this room. The alteration of this space should be avoided
as this area has a high integrity of original material in good condition. But this room also takes
up a good portion of the footprint of the building, and the remaining spaces are limited in size
and quantity. Without disrupting the reception hall the possibility of integrating new layouts
within the shell of the existing building is greatly reduced.
Placing an addition on the building would allow for more opportunities in creating functional
spaces around the reception hall. The additions could be designed in such a manner to respect
the style and image of the existing building, but this is dependent upon the space needs of the
occupant and site constraints.
Sunset Memorial Park Administration Building
Preliminary National Register and Condition Assessment—Page 11
