Planning Commission Meeting Minutes
October 17, 2006
Page 3
Mr. Archambeau replied he believed they were roughly 13 or 14 inches high.

Commissioner Jenson asked Mr. Archambeau if the proposed 14.5 inches would replicate what is
currently in place.

Mr. Archambeau replied the proposed sign would be no larger than the current sign. He
displayed a graphic of the proposed sign stating only two of the products carried would be
displayed; a smaller space for the sign may be required. He mentioned the current sign advertises
three products.

Commissioner Jensen asked Assistant City Manager Moore-Sykes if what is proposed is that
okay the height be limited to the smaller of the two sizes displayed on the graphic; he did not see
the harm in having a 21-inch number if that is what has been submitted in the package.

Mr. Archambeau replied the upper portion of the sign is 21.5 inches; what is written in the packet
is that the numbers themselves could not be more than 14.5 inches in height. Mr. Archambeau
stated the way he interprets the display is the top portion of the sign would be 21.5 inches. He
stated he is not sure of the exact height of the digital display.

Chair Stromgren stated if it stays as written, Mobil would have the option of making it smaller or
adding the third product.

Assistant City Manager Moore-Sykes stated at the last meeting, the Commissioners talked about
the size and not wanting them more than 14.5 inch high. She mentioned this is the public
hearing for changes to the ordinance. She mentioned Council would hold three readings.
Assistant City Manager Moore-Sykes stated if the Commission wants to suggest a taller font size,
Staff could do that.

Chair Stromgren commented, based on his unscientific survey, the current size at the stations in
St Anthony seem to work fine. He stated electronic signs would be that much more obvious and
easer to read; the larger size would not be needed for slower speed streets. He stated that if they
were on an interstate, it would be different.

Commissioner Jensen stated the rewriting of the code applies only if the sign is on a pylon sign.
He explained a number of businesses have a monument signs and he did not see why the benefit
could not be carried over to the monument signs also.

Commissioner Galyon asked Commissioner Jensen if he was referring to only gas stations.

Commissioner Jensen stated what is often seen in a refurbished gas station is a sign incorporated
into a monument sign. He stated he did not see why it must state only a pylon sign or what harm
it would cause the community to include a monument sign.

Assistant City Manager Moore-Sykes stated the applicant had asked the pylon sign to become
electronic because it is the most difficult to reach manually.
