c
Planning Commission Meeting Minutes
October 17, 2006
Page 4

Chair Stromgren replied the current code is written for gas price signage to be on a pylon. He
stated Commissioner Jensen is correct in that a number of signs are monument style in and out of
the City.

Commissioner Jensen responded the Commission is attempting to update the code to deal with
current and future conditions. He stated during the reading process, he would like to insure
monument signs are included so another amendment would not be needed later.

Chair Stromgren reported receiving one email from Mr. Dennis Cavanaugh expressing his
concern about the impact an electronic sign would have on the neighborhood.

Chair Stromgren closed the public hearing at 7:17 p.m.

Commissioner Jensen remarked the Commission should deal with monument signs as well as
pylon signs for gas stations. He stated perhaps the proposal should be sent back to Staff to
include monument signs.

Chair Stromgren replied he is not sure if this is referenced in another subsection.

Commissioner Jensen responded he is offering an amendment to ensure changeable copy is
allowed regardless of the sign type and to continue the reading process forward. He stated he is
confident staff would find the correct wording. Commissioner Jensen recommended wording in
subdivision two of the amendment.

Chair Stromgren pointed out the first sentence where pylon is also referenced.

Commissioner Jensen recommended making a global change.

Commissioner Jenson asked if both monument and pylon signs are freestanding. He suggested
leaving the word freestanding to represent both monument and pylon signs.

Chair Stromgren replied monument and pylon signs are both defined in the beginning of Chapter
14. He state this would keep everything consistent and insure a reference is not missed.
Commissioner Jensen stated it is an attempt to make a copy change sooner than later rather than
in the middle of the winter.

Chair Stromgren stated he wants to make sure it remains monument or pylon so it could not
become attached to the building. He stated only one monument sign with the LED is allowed per
business.

Commissioner Jensen pointed out subdivision two mentions one sign only. He asked Assistant
City Manager Moore-Sykes if the Commission could forward this to the City Council along with
the friendly amendments and discussion.
