He stated the Vital Aging Council helped the Police Department with a 24- <br />2 hour emergency business contact project. Chief Ohl stated the group contacted 125 businesses <br />3 for the project. He mentioned the Vital Aging Council also stepped forward to help with an <br />4 emergency leaflet project to disseminate specific information into the neighborhoods. Chief Ohl <br />5 stated these programs would not have happened without the Vital Aging Council's energetic and <br />6 civic - minded volunteers. <br />7 <br />8 Mayor Faust thanked the members of Vital Aging for their efforts to do these projects. He stated <br />9 a letter explaining Vital Aging that did not get into the newsletter would go out in a separate <br />10 mailing to all residents. Mayor Faust expressed his appreciation for all the efforts of the Vital <br />11 Aging Council and stated the City Council would help them with whatever they need to stay <br />12 connected to the community. <br />13 <br />14 B. Police Reserve, Recognized by John Ohl, Police Chief <br />15 <br />16 Police Chief Ohl presented several members of the Police Reserve Volunteers to the City <br />17 Council. He explained the purpose of the Police Reserve program is to be a volunteer <br />18 organization that donates its time and efforts for the betterment of St. Anthony residents. He <br />19 stated the Police Reserves are the ultimate volunteers who put on the uniform and put themselves <br />20 in harms way. Chief Ohl stated he could not say enough about the professionalism of the St. <br />21 Anthony Reserve Officers; the Police Officers have a very high regard for the Police Reserve. <br />22 He stated the Police Reserve logged about 3,000 hours of volunteer time last year. Chief Ohl <br />23 mentioned five new individuals were added to the reserve force. He introduced the members of <br />24 the Police Reserve in attendance. Chief Ohl also recognized Reserve Lieutenant Bob Nehring <br />25 who donated 6,595 hours over 19 years, and Sergeant Gary Myrick who donated over 5,600 <br />26 hours over 13 years with the St. Anthony Police Reserve. Chief Ohl presented Lieutenant <br />27 Nehring and Sergeant Gary Myrick with plaques for their work in making the reserve program <br />28 what it is today. <br />29 <br />30 Mayor Faust mentioned the average work year is 2,080 hours, which meant, Lieutenant Nehring <br />31 donated three and one half years and Sergeant Myrick donated nearly three years of free police <br />32 work to the community. Mayor Faust stated many of the community events could not happen <br />33 without the help of the Police Reserved. He thanked them for filling in the gaps and the sense of <br />34 safety, well- being, and concern for the citizens they show the members of the community. He <br />35 mentioned taxes would be much higher without the Police Reserve. <br />36 <br />37 C. Citizen's Academy Graduation, Recognized by John Ohl, Police Chief <br />38 <br />39 Police Chief Ohl recognized the first Citizen's Academy graduates. He explained everyone's <br />40 idea of law enforcement comes from TV and it becomes increasingly difficult because of <br />41 unrealistic expectations. Chief Ohl stated the Police Department works hard to dispel some of <br />42 the myths about what it takes to become a police officer and do the job. He explained students <br />43 covered patrol procedures, firearms, criminal law, finger printing, alcohol and drugs, use of force <br />44 and some even volunteered to be tazed. He commented the students came away with a better <br />45 idea of what it takes to do this profession. Chief Ohl reported City Manager Mornson attended <br />
