St. Anthony Splash Pad Retrofit Feasibility Study
January 24, 2017
Page 3

K:\02170-430\Admin\Docs\MEMO_StA_SplashPadfinal.docx
Option 3 – Irrigation
Both splash pads are located in parks where irrigation systems are in use. The discharge from the splash
pad has the potential to eliminate potable water use for irrigation. A new underground tank would need to
be installed at Emerald Park to capture splash pad water for later irrigation use (Illustration A).

Illustration A: Sketch of a flow-through splash pad with underground storage and irrigation.
Benefits
Approximately 10-30% of the water used in the splash pad is available for irrigation
Eliminate potable water use for irrigation during an average year
Maintain user experience

Drawbacks
Water consumption rates for the splash pad will not decrease unless coupled with other options.
Option 4 – Recirculation
Option 4 is a recirculation system that connects the splash pad system drain to an underground storage
tank where the water in the storage tank is disinfected and sanitized before it is recirculated back to the
splash pad (shown in Illustration B). Recirculating water treatment system uses about 97% less water
than the current conditions. However, it requires a pool certified and licensed operator , more daily
monitoring and management, and a sanitary connection for backwash water.
