2016 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

21 | Page

Our second half of firefighter I and II training has a lot to do with more specialized training
such as hazardous materials training, pre incident planning, terrorism awareness and assisting
special rescue teams. Throw in some more emergency medical care with that and then get into
fire prevention and education so that they know how to correctly teach and pass along all this
knowledge to others. Normally we end with fire detection and protection systems and fire
cause and determination. A few catch up days to finish up any one of these items that we may
need to work more on to sharpen our skills and then we can move on to state testing and
certifications.
Each candidate is required to pass all state certifications for firefighter I and II. Each candidate is
required to pass all state certifications for EMT. Both of these tests are made up of a written
exam along with multiple skills stations and neither of the tests are easy ones to accomplish.
Once everyone has completed all the required training for not only our department level but
also state level they move on and get sworn in as a firefighter for the City of St. Anthony Fire
Department. They get to start working shifts and filling in learning how day to day operations
around the station work and respond to calls to help our citizens of the community. The
training is complete and the all the instructors get a break after a long year except this year, we
recently hired four more firefighter candidates and get the start the process all over again. This
quick turn around and hiring of more personnel is due to the recent retiring over the past few
years of very seasoned firefighters with upwards of over 20 years of service on the department
and one day we hope that all of our fine firefighter candidates can bring their firefighter careers
to an end with many years of service and be able to pass along all of their knowledge to the next
up and coming candidates.
