2016 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

22 | Page

V. Fire Code
By Fire Marshal Chris Fuller
FIRE CODE ACTIVITIES

FIRE CODE
The latest version of the Uniform Fire Code was adopted by the state. It was a long process,
over 3 years. This means the new version of the Uniform Fire Code will already be coming out
next year. The state is attempting to streamline the process for more efficient code adoption.
There were some significant changes in the new code related to Sprinkler Requirements related
to multi-family dwellings adding townhomes. Residential Sprinklers were the main contention
point of the new code and the language requiring it was removed. There are some differences
between the Building Code and Fire Code that can make interpretation difficult. Working with
the New Brighton Building Code official has been easy and informative. We both will bring
items to the others attention to get a uniform opinion.

TRAINING
All full-time fire department staff have state Fire Inspector I certification. The staff gets
continuing education throughout the year provided by local & state assistance. With the
adoption of the new code all staff attended 2-day code update classes put on by the State Fire
Marshal’s office. I also try to include training in our monthly full time staff meeting

PERMITS
Construction plans are reviewed to ensure compliance with state and national codes in the area
of site plans, fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, egress plans, hazardous operations,
construction and operational plans. Last year there were no significant projects – mostly
remodels and build outs.
