6 II. Department Divisions
2014 Annual Report · Public Works Department · St. Anthony Village, Minnesota
Establishment of a City-owned Utility – Lease vs Own
Franchise Agreement Uncertainty – As Staff has been working through franchise agreement negotiations
with Comcast, the possibility has been discussed that the continued use of the I-NET network would no
longer be at “no cost”.
This possible new cost is anticipated to be approximately $5,900 per month or $70,800 annually for the
Liquor Operation and City Hall.
Expanded Technological Capacity
Fiber optics networks offer superior for bandwidth, reliability, resiliency and security to meet the every
growing demand for higher bandwidth services and to extend services further. And since fi ber optics
is non-metallic, it is not subject to interference from radio or electromagnetic interference making it far
more reliable and secure than copper or wireless transmission.
Creation of this dedicated network would allow for the expansion of capabilities that are not available
using Metro-INET. For example:
Liquor Inventory Management – Each store maintains a separate point of sale system and local database
of store inventory. Data synchronization is conducted in the overnight hours because of the limited
bandwidth on the T1 circuit at
·Silver Lake Village. With high-speed, secured data connectivity directly between the two stores the
inventory system would be synchronized in real-time.
·Real – Time Video Security System Access – Currently each liquor store operates a separate video
security system with local storage of the captured video. This could be consolidated into a single
network based solution. Security video would also be available in real-time to the police department
both in the building and from police mobile units.
Other Engineering projects include:
· Addressing regional fl ooding in residential areas
· Continuing work on planning LED street light and public building lighting projects throughout
the City
· Completing a fi nal report for Mirror Lake dredging and structure replacement project
