2016 Annual Report • Administration • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

10

REGIONAL STORMWATER TREATMENT & RESEARCH
FACILITY
In 2016, the City Council participated in a ribbon cutting for this new
facility. Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO)
provided a $1.6 million grant to the City of St. Anthony for construction of
the research facility. This project is anticipated to remove more than half of
the stormwater pollutants currently flowing from 600 heavily urbanized
acres of St. Anthony Village, into the Mississippi River. This facility will use a combination of
technologies to annually remove 39 tons (63 percent) of sediment and 176 pounds (47 percent)
of phosphorus from stormwater runoff flowing from St. Anthony Village through Minneapolis.
This project will have an immediate impact in improving the quality of water discharged to the
Mississippi River. This facility also provides valuable research opportunities to test and
evaluate current and newly developed stormwater treatment technologies. This research will be
shared with other stormwater professionals to improve the effectiveness and reduce the costs of
keeping Minnesota’s lakes, rivers and streams clean.
