2016 Annual Report • Public Works Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

8

Salo Park Alum System
The Silver Lake Stormwater Treatment System was built to improve the Salo Park stormwater
ponds’ ability to remove phosphorus. This underground water treatment system has been
constructed north of 39th Avenue and on the south side of the north pond. This work was
completed in the late summer of 2015 and is was put into full operation in 2016.
The City aims to reduce the yearly phosphorous runoff into Silver Lake by 26 pounds. The City
will accomplish this reduction by drawing water from the Salo Ponds and injecting a chemical
that will bind to phosphorous in the water, causing the phosphorous to settle out in large
underground tanks. The cleaned water will then be sent back into Salo Ponds making the water
that flows from Salo Ponds to Silver Lake much cleaner.
The current phosphorous removal efficiency of Salo Ponds is about 54%, and the new system is
anticipated to increase this efficiency by up to 90%.
