2017 Strategic Plan • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota <br /> <br /> <br />Enhancing Our Civility | 11 <br />ENHANCING OUR CIVILITY <br />Ken Morris, J.D. of the APERCU Group was invited to present on civility and inclusion, and how <br />the City can ensure those concepts are permanently incorporated into how decisions are made. <br />Among the many ideas discussed, below is a list of key guiding principles: <br />LEADERSHIP DIVERSITY & INCLUSION PRINCIPLES <br />• Operate from a position of knowledge & wisdom – seek understanding of those who are <br />different <br />• Understand the “seed” principle (any harvest or return is based entirely on what you sow) <br />• Associate with wise counselors <br />• Choose words wisely <br />• Recognize “connections” with those who are different <br />• Understand that people are interdependent <br />• Seek balance in all things <br />• Lead by serving the interests of those who follow <br />• Manage yourself and others through Perceptual Reality (recognize the impact of <br />perception on behaviors but focus on the facts) <br />ROLE AS A LEADER <br />Create & maintain an environment of inclusion for all members of the community by: <br />• Building positive relationships with those who are different <br />• Reconciling seemingly competing positions <br />• Within yourself (workplace and personal positions) <br />• Between colleagues/community members/guests to the Village <br />• Staying informed about diversity & inclusion and communicating the impact on the <br />institution/community <br />• Recognizing when my cultural patterning influences interactions with others. <br />• Seek opportunities to learn about difference by observing, reading & attending cultural <br />events <br />• Recognizing and acknowledging diverse celebrations <br />• Focusing on the behavior not the difference of others <br />• Challenging disrespectful behavior in others <br />• Actively supporting, where appropriate and practicable, ways to make the <br />institution/department/team more inclusive for a wide range of differences <br />“Civility, in whatever <br />form, is the natural <br />consequence of doing <br />the right things, at <br />the right time, in the <br />right way and for all <br />the right reasons.” <br />- Ken Morris, JD
