2017 Strategic Plan • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

Long Term Vision/Priorities | 12
LONG TERM VISION/PRIORITIES
Facilitator Bruce Miles presented the group with information intended to assist the group in
forming a mindset on a long-term, strategic focus. Some of the ideas presented are below:

WHY SHOULD ORGANIZATIONS PLAN?

Bring clarity and agreement on mission and vision
Agreement on mission (the organization’s purpose) is paramount. Defining a shared vision (the
organization’s future direction) and then planning based on that desired outcome is the essence of
strategic planning.
Help organizations prepare for the future
As the popular saying goes, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll probably end up
someplace else.” A strategic plan outlines the steps to achieve a desired future for an organization.
Help organizations anticipate and manage change
Planning allows an organization to anticipate change and prepare for it. Planning also helps an
organization deal with dramatic changes in its environment. In fact, by anticipating and planning
for change, instead of just reacting to it, an organization can determine how to deal with change.
Improve the decision-making processes
With a strategic plan in place, day-to-day decision making and problem solving will be directly
related to long-range and short-term goals. When choices are made within the context of a
strategic framework, the organization’s direction is clearly defined. Strategic decision making and
problem solving assure that the organization’s vision will be achieved.
Promote effective stewardship
Practicing good stewardship means being accountable to others. Because strategic planning helps
organizations fulfill their missions, it also helps them be stewards of the public’s trust.

From: Why Should Organizations Plan?, AFL Mackay,11/29/2011
