2017 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

12 | Page

IV. Fire Code
By Fire Marshal Chris Fuller
FIRE CODE ACTIVITIES

FIRE CODE
The latest version of the International Fire Code, amended to be the
Minnesota State Fire Code came out after a long adoption process in 2016. Replacement of
smoke alarms after 10 years was probably the biggest change to affect our city. I have worked
with apartment buildings and used the newsletter to get information out to home owners of this
new requirement. Rental Inspections was informed of the change and will be enforcing for
rental property other than apartment buildings.
The new International Fire Code, 2018, will be coming out soon and the state hopes to have a
better process. To put it into perspective the 2015 Minnesota State Fire Code was based on the
2012 International Fire Code and was adopted in 2016. The 2015 International Fire Code was
not even converted to a Minnesota State Fire Code. As I said the hope is the process will be
much shorter with the adoption of the 2018 International Fire code.
I currently serve on a code advisory committee with the state, all volunteer, for the upcoming
new Building Code. I am looking forward to the process – attending meetings with a spectrum
of representatives to make recommendations on a particular area of the Building Code.
Working with the New Brighton Building Code official has been easy and informative. Geven
has been a great resource and will be missed when he leaves. We have had the opportunity to
begin working with Jeremy from the City of New Brighton who will be Geven’s replacement. It
will be tough to replace Geven’s years of experience and certifications.
