2017 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

13 | Page

TRAINING
All full-time fire department staff have state Fire Inspector I certification. The staff gets
continuing education throughout the year provided by local & state assistance. As Fire
Marshal, I attended various training sessions and serve on the Fire Marshals of Minnesota board
as the treasurer. This group meets quarterly and has been a great networking opportunity and
training is provided at every meeting. All of our inspectors would benefit by joining this group.

PERMITS
Construction plans are reviewed to ensure compliance with state and national codes in the area
of site plans, fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, egress plans, hazardous operations,
construction and operational plans. The potential project at Lowry Grove is the biggest project
under consideration and time was spent looking at concept layouts for possible concerns with
the Fire Code.
The Fire Marshal’s office issues campfire permits to ensure fire safety conditions are met and
pollution issues are minimized. Since we increased the permit length to 5 years for
homeowners we only issue a few permits every year. Program is going well.
In addition there are several other permits outlined in the state fire code and required by city
code. Fire Alarm, temporary occupancy, hot works, hazardous materials, and burn permits are
a few of the other permits. Currently we do not issue many of these permits. Most cities
implement some or all of these permits with a fee schedule. We did issue a few temporary
membrane structure permits but did not charge any fees.

INSPECTIONS
Inspections of buildings and facilities are conducted to ensure compliance with state and
national codes and standards. These inspections include general fire prevention inspections and
inspections of specific systems and services. The specific inspections involve fire protection
systems including restaurant hood extinguishing systems, fire alarm systems and fire sprinkler
systems.
