2017 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

29 | Page

additional alarms. This is not a formal fire inspection but a very informal discussion. We do
require a simple informational sheet we fill out and return to the Red Cross. Based on the
situation and need, we are able to supply up to 3 fire alarms at no cost. These are supplied to us
at no cost (thru the partnership) by the American Red Cross.
HEART SAFE COMMUNITY
The City of St. Anthony continues to be recognized by the
American Heart Association and Minnesota Department of Health
as a Heart Safe Community. This was accomplished thru an
application process that focused on our readiness as a community
to handle any type of cardiac event within the city. This not only
looked at the readiness and equipment level of the personnel responding to a 911 call for help:
police, fire and Ambulance. It also focused on the community at large. Our Police officers are
trained as first responders, and as state certified EMT’s the members of the St. Anthony Fire
Department have special training in handling any cardiac event. Our city also teams up with
Hennepin County Medical Center for our ambulance service. All these levels of care from basic
through advanced care, were viewed as highly favorable on our application. But that was not all
that was required. We also needed to demonstrate the community itself was ready for action.
This is where all of our CPR training done in the schools, and CPR classes given by members of
the department to the local public come into play. But yet there was more needed! We made an
attempt to locate businesses that have public access to an AED or Automated External
Defibrillator. This tool plays a big role in the AHA’s Chain Of Survival! We found that many of
our local businesses and offices have access to an AED! All of this put together allowed the
American Heart Association to designate the City of St. Anthony as a Heart Safe Community!
In 2017 we continued to make the effort to improve our community by offering and giving CPR
courses by certified instructors on the fire department. With this ongoing training and AED
availability continuing to grow, the City of St. Anthony strives to continue to grow as a Heart
Safe Community.
As a Heart Safe Community it is in our interests to see that there is a way to be proactive when
it comes to your heart health. One way we can do this as firefighters is to offer Blood Pressure
Checks at our fire station. Whether you are just curious about what your blood pressure is or
