Fire Prevention and Education
By Firefighter Mattie Jaros
Fire Prevention and Educational programs are core functions in the fire service
departments. These programs are in place to help decrease fire related injuries
and deaths. Over the years, statistics show fire related deaths continue to decline.
This is due to a multitude of factors; a couple of the main influences are the fire
prevention and education programs implemented by fire departments.
2017 was another busy year. We continued to expand our fire prevention and education
programs in the schools and younger generations of our community. Last year, we developed
an education plan that would be appropriate for each age level. Our main objective was to
develop a learning plan that would piggyback what the classes learned the previous year. This
past year we continued that goal.
We started with visiting the Kindergarteners
twice. The initial visit being at their school’s first
fire drill. We took this opportunity to talk about
why fire drills are important and walked through
the safe way to conduct them. In February, we
visited the classrooms a second time during “I
Love to read month”, We utilize this time to read
to the children a book about fire safety and start a
discussion on fire safety topics relevant to their
age.
