2017 Annual Report • Fire Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

31 | Page

In first grade, we spent time discussing smoke alarms, dialing 911 and put on our fire gear for
them to see. This educational session teaches the 1st graders where smoke alarms are located in
their home, why they are important and what to do if their fire alarm goes off. We created a
scenario with a fake phone and 911 operator and had the students call 911, the operator then
went through questions that a 911 dispatcher may ask.
We took things a step further with the Second
graders, we created a home escape plan. We
visited classrooms and set-up a board with an
overview of a home. A few students
volunteered to show the 2 ways out of the
bedroom from the home and where their
meeting place would be on the white board.
They were sent home with the paperwork and
supplies to do the same project with their
family. This allowed the conversation of fire
safety to trickle back into the home where
parents and sibling could participate. We came
back a week later with “approval” stamps to mark the students work and congratulate them on
their completed plans.

The Safe Escape house was the Third graders learning experience. They took what they learned
the year before, creating safe escape plans and put them into action. We brought the safe escape
house to the schools. Each group of students got to travel room to room to discuss the home
hazards and how to prevent fires from happening. In the final room, a bedroom, they got to
practice what they would do if there was a fire in their home. We used theatrical smoke and set
off a smoke alarm and students had to safely exit the home and get to their “meeting spot” and
verify everyone was out safely.
