2017 Annual Report • Police Department • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

33 | P a g e

XIII. Dare Summary
PREPARED BY OFFICER JONATHAN SCHLINGMAN
St Anthony Police Department has been partnering
with the St Anthony School District for the past 28
years teaching D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance
Education). Throughout those 28 years, there have
been a total of 5 officers from the St Anthony Police
Department that come into the classrooms of
Wilshire Park, St Anthony Middle School and St Charles Borromeo School.
Officer Schlingman is the current DARE Officer and
is in his 5th year of educating the young minds of
5th and 8th grade students at each of the schools
(over 300 students). Officer Schlingman leads
classroom discussions on topics that range from;
responsibilities, peer pressure, stress, decision
making, drug information, and how to
communicate effectively. These are all topics
learned in 5th grade.
While most schools only teach the DARE program in
elementary school, here in St Anthony, the students get
more information in 8th Grade to help them make positive
decisions, and lead safe and healthy lifestyles. As the
students become older they work on how to respond to
different situations that may occur in their life. By helping
build confidence among our youth it will help with making
better, safer choices. Other topics that were learned in the
classroom were; internet/social media safety, identifying
risks, bullying, and prescription medication/drug abuse.
