2017 Annual Report • Administration • St. Anthony Village, Minnesota

28

Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) Cohort
The City of St. Anthony joined the 2017 cohort comprised of a number of governmental entities
from around Minnesota that are working with the Government Alliance on Race and Equity
(GARE) to advance racial equity in government. GARE is working to advance racial equity and
increase opportunities for all communities and building the field of practice to advance racial
equity within and through government, which is to our collective benefit.
GARE’s strategies include:
• Organizing a membership network of jurisdictions working to advance racial equity
• Expanding pathways for new jurisdictions to begin doing racial equity work via work
with individual jurisdictions
• Supporting and building local and regional collaborations that are broadly inclusive and
focused on achieving racial equity
GARE's focus is on normalizing conversations about race, operationalizing new policies,
practices and organizational cultures, and organizing to achieve racial equity. We are seeing
more and more jurisdictions that are making a commitment to achieving racial equity, focusing
on the power and influence of our own institutions, and working in partnership across sectors
and with the community to maximize impact.
The cohorts met each month to review presentations from the GARE facilitators and to
exchange experiences and thoughts on equity with members of the other cohort teams. GARE
also offered Speaker Series opportunities to hear from authorities on the advancement of equity.
In May the team was invited to hear three panelists discuss their experiences in advancing racial
equity. We heard from Terri Thao from Nexus Community Partners, Vina Kay from Voices for
Racial Justice, and Nadine Graves from We Are All Criminals (WAAC). The panel was
insightful, and offered encouragement to all the local government representatives in attendance
to further this important work.
In July the teams heard from Erika Bernabei, Equity & Results, LLC who spoke on
collective impact and results based accountability. The teams also heard from city leaders in
Maplewood and St. Paul around their work on equity in public safety, their workforces and
contract procurement.
