What is this: The purpose of the program is to bring the youth of the St. Anthony New Brighton
Community into the leadership structure of various programs in the St. Anthony New Brighton
community, city, and schools.
The youth are creative and inquisitive. The students offer unique perspectives through their
various range of skills as well as their individual backgrounds. The commissions, boards, and
organizations not only become acquainted with the youth of the community but also are
enhanced by their inclusion in the decision‐making process. While students will not have an
official vote on the final outcome of the decision, they will be able to share their view(s) on the
subject.

Why should the youth do it: The students will develop leadership skills and gain valuable life
experience through this service. The students will learn how decisions are made, using their
voice and opinion to effect positive change in a tactful and calm manner. In addition, students
will become aware of their strengths in regard to various topics. Students will also become
acquainted with the parliamentary procedures implemented at each meeting.

How is this accomplished: This is done through the inclusion of youth on the many
boards/organization’s leaders. Rather than just being “added” to the list of board, these youth
will require training and mentorship. They will train on meeting protocol, a review of Robert’s
Rules of Order, public relations, etc. An adult mentor will be assigned to explain the operation
of the Board prior to the first meeting.

Mission: To develop the future of democracy by preparing our youth for a life of informed,
active citizenship, who, while working together with others, will gain an understanding of the
discussions necessary to implement changes.

When does it happen: Students will be apprised of the meeting schedule prior to the start of
the service.

What organizations are participating:
1. St. Anthony New Brighton Family Services Collaborative (2‐3 students)
2. St. Anthony Planning Commission (1 student)
